OpenFlex Microscope
Optical microscopes are an essential tool for both the detection of disease in clinics, and for scientific analysis. However, in much of the world access to high-performance microscopy is limited by both the upfront cost and maintenance cost of the equipment. The OpenFlexure microscope has been designed to enable low-volume manufacturing and maintenance by local personnel, vastly increasing accessibility.

AYB Adaptation and characterization
The title of the project is “Evaluation of African Yam Bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa (Hochst. ex A. Rich) Harms) for its growth, productivity and nutritional composition as a means for food security and bio-drill in Ethiopia” AYB is one of the numerous underutilized legumes in Africa with great potentials as a food security crop in developing countries. It is cultivated for both edible seeds and underground tubers. AYB is hypothesized to originate from Ethiopia. However, it is currently a forgotten crop and recent survey of herbaria collections only found Ethiopian AYB samples dated from mid-1800s. This suggests that AYB used to grow in Ethiopia but now has disappeared from the agricultural practice in the country. Compared to other grain legume crops, AYB can form both high protein beans and tubers on one plant. The current research will encourage more studies; bring to knowledge the crop‟s potential and the need for its exploitation in Ethiopia. Therefore, this project aims to study the growth and productivity of AYB in tilled soils in Ethiopia and determine the differences in protein and starch composition of the tubers from the different accessions. Field study is conducting at the teaching and research farm of the Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Bahir Dar university during the irrigation season of 2022. There are 20 accessions were obtained from IITA; from which only 8 accessions was tested in RCBD design with three replications.
